Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s Anomalisa is an extraordinary film. A small scale human drama played out in stop motion animation, it tells the story of a brief encounter between Michael Stone (David Thewlis), a self-loathing motivational author, and Lisa Hesselman (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a shy young woman attending one of Michael’s seminars (wonderfully, every other voice is provided by character actor and one time Tooth Fairy Tom Noonan). It’s a beautiful work, simultaneously merciless and humane.
