What might have been, eh? Joe Carnahan (Narc, The Grey, various lesser works in between) had an interesting take on Daredevil, and Fox were certainly eager to try and hold onto the rights – they revert back to Marvel very soon, if Fox don’t have a new DD film in production – but it looks like it’s not gonna happen. It’s a damn shame, because a vigilante superhero film set in the ’70s conjures up all kinds of tantalizing touchstones – Death Wish, Taxi Driver, and Watergate, to name a few – and there are several Marvel characters – Power Man & Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Dazzler – that are a better fit for such a milieu than any modern setting. It’s also not the first time Carnahan’s pursued a comic book property – he voiced an interest in adapting Preacher, and frankly he might not be a bad fit for the material. At the least, he couldn’t be much worse than D.J. Caruso.
